A designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the county has been captured in paintings by Gainsborough and John Constable, one of his famous paintings being the Flatford Mill.To the West of the county, Newmarket dominates the horse racing world with the Tattersalls Bloodstock Sales, two racecourses, the National Horseracing Museum, and the National Stud. Famous jockeys Lester Piggott and Frankie Dettori have homes in the area.
The national charity Sue Ryder Homes is based in the Village of Cavendish. A famous town Bury St. Edmunds is named after the Christian Martyr Saint Edmund, otherwise known as Edmund The Martyr or Edmund of East Anglia, who was Patron Saint of All England until the thirteenth century, when he was replaced by St George. However in 2006 a campaign to replace St Edmund to his former status was taken out but failed.
Famous Suffolk folk include composer Benjamin Britten, radio presenter John Peel, and actors Ralph Fiennes and Bob Hoskins.
A siginficant landmark of Suffolk is the great Orwell Bridge which carries the A14 over the River Orwell just South of Ipswich.
