The earliest structure in the area is Loughton Camp - an Iron age fort dating from 500BC. It remained hidden in dense undergrowth and rediscovered in 1872. Loughton Hall was the home of Mary Tudor at the time she became Queen Mary of England. Between 1968 and 1973 the now demolished Wakes Arms pub venue hosted such iconic groups as Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Pretty Things, Status Quo and Uriah Heep.
The Loughton area of Debden is now the home of the famous East 15 Acting School which was named after the Stratford London postal district where it originated.
